FVRD

Who We Are

The Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) stretches across 14,000 hectares of scenic landscape from Abbotsford to Boston Bar, and is home to approximately 280,000 residents living within its six municipalities and seven electoral areas. For a complete list of municipalities and electoral areas, visit our website.

Like municipalities, the Regional District is a local government organization. Regional Districts are unique to British Columbia and provide a broad range of local government services to residents who live in either an urban (i.e. a municipality) or a rural (i.e. an unincorporated area) part of the Region.  Regional Districts serve three important purposes:

  • We are the local government for unincorporated areas. In the FVRD we provide these areas with utility (water & sewer) planning, building inspection, garbage collection and other similar services.
  • We provide the framework necessary for urban and rural areas to collaborate on delivering services to a portion of the region (e.g. Noxious weed control, Recreational services, etc.)
  • We also provide region wide services to all our residents including Regional Planning, Solid Waste Management, emergency 911 and Fire Dispatch to name a few.

The Regional District Board is comprised of 13 members representing our six member municipalities, and seven electoral directors representing the unincorporated areas of the region.

Our Role in Regional Air Quality

Due to its unique geography, the FVRD lies within a sensitive airshed, particularly susceptible to the build-up of air pollution, which can negatively impact both human health and the environment.

The FVRD’s Planning Department oversees air quality monitoring for the region (in partnership with Metro Vancouver), and uses information gathered at air quality monitoring stations dispersed throughout the region, to identify potential air quality issues, and plan for future policy and strategies.
